Abstract:

This report reviews the hazardous materials rail traffic of 33 selected hazardous materials commoditites or commodity groups in 1986, a relatively typical recent year. The flow of the selected commodities by rail are characterized and their geographic distribution is illustrated. National, state and BEA detail is presented. Traffic flow maps are provided for each commodity. The data presented was taken from the 1986 ICC Carload Waybill Sample. The included commodities or commodity groups are (1) All Hazardous Materials, (2) Chemicals and Allied Products, (3) Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizer, (4) Anhydrous Ammonia, (5) Hydrochloric Acid, (10) Hydrogen Peroxide Solution, (11) Industrial Organic Chemicals, (12) Industrial Organic and Inorganic Chemicals, (13) Methanol, (14) Miscellaneous Chemical Products, (15) Chemical Products, NEC, (16) Nitric Acid, (17) Phosphatic Fertilizer Solution, (18) Phosphoric Acid, (19)Styrene Monomer, Inhibited, (2) Sulphuric Acid, (21)Vinyl chloride, (22) Xylene, (23) Petroleum or Coal Products, (24)Products of Refining, (25) Gasoline and Jet Fuels, (26) Liquefied Petroleum and Coal Gases, (27) Petroleum Refining Products, NEC, (28) Hazardous Materials Other Than Chemicals or Allied Products and Petroleum or Coal Products, (29) Molten or Liquid Sulphur, (30) Class A&B Explosives, (31) Corrosive Liquid, NOS, (32)flammable Liquid, NOS, and (33) Products That May Be Toxic by Inhalation
