Abstract:The high-capacity personal rapid transit (HCPRT) system must operate with very short headways. To achieve safe operation at these headways, the propulsion system should meet certain unconventional requirements. They include reversible thrust capabilities, short response time, and peak thrust exceeding three times nominal thrust. These requirements were determined by analysis, computer simulations, and data provided by DOT/TSC. Five propulsion systems capable of meeting these requirements have been surveyed in this report. As background to the survey, several vehicle resistance curves were calculated for a baseline vehicle with assumed dimensions and weight. Four types of vehicle suspension methods were considered.
