  • Abstract:
    These proceedings contain the results of a two-day Conference on Basic Research Directions for Advanced Automotive Technology held at the Sheraton-Boston Hotel on February 13 & 14, 1979. The Conference, which was open to the public, was attended by several hundred leaders from industry, academic institutions, and independent research and consumer groups. The Conference was organized by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Transportation Systems Center. The Conference was convened to discuss basic research activities which could provide a pool of technological options for automobile manufacturers in the areas of engines, fuels and powertrains and structures and materials. The results of the Conference will be used to develop a technology agenda which will establish the direction taken to reach the fuel economy standard of 27 mph by 1985 and the 40-50 mph goal by the year 2000. This report contains the proceedings of the Conference. The report is presented in four volumes: Volume I: Conference Report Volume II: Panel Deliberations Volume III: Conference Docket Submissions, Parts I & II Volume IV: Conference Transcripts.
