Abstract:The report presents an evaluation of the Southern Pacific Passenger Fare Subsidy Program. The Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) operates passenger rail service in the San Jose - San Francisco corridor, catering primarily to peak period commuters traveling into San Francisco. Beginning in January 1978, the price of SP multiple-ride tickets was reduced by 30 percent. In addition, free feeder bus service was provided to SP stations in one of the three counties in the corridor. The evaluation addresses several issues of interest to federal government and policy-making agencies, the transit industry at large and the state and local agencies involved in the subsidy program.
