Description:This report summarizes research and findings of the Airliner Cabin Environment Research (ACER) Program under the National Air Transportation Center of Excellence for Research in the Intermodal Transport Environment (RITE). In response to Congressional mandates, ACER investigators addressed six key areas: ozone levels in passenger cabins, pesticide exposure, cabin pressure and altitude, air quality incidents, residue analysis, and aircraft decontamination. Studies showed that ozone levels on most monitored flights complied with federal regulations, though exceedances occurred on some flights lacking ozone converters. Pesticide residues and exposures were primarily an issue on international flights requiring disinsection. Research on cabin pressures found that older or medically vulnerable passengers may be at risk for hypoxia and arrhythmia, suggesting a need for updated health guidance. Air quality incident investigations indicated serious contamination events are rare, but new sensor technologies and large-scale health surveys provided critical baseline data on exposure and crew health. Filter residue analysis showed promise for diagnosing contamination sources, though not definitive for exposure quantification. Field tests demonstrated the efficacy of vaporized hydrogen peroxide for aircraft decontamination, with consideration for material compatibility. The report calls for updated regulatory standards for ozone, more comprehensive exposure assessments for pesticides, ongoing monitoring, and further research on environmental and health challenges in commercial aircraft cabins.
