  • Description:
This research report establishes recommendations to guide the development of material specifications for continuous fiber-reinforced woven fabric oxide/oxide (ox/ox) ceramic matrix composite (CMC) prepreg. This report is intended to advance the work that has been done through previous Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) programs that have established a methodology for developing and standardizing statistically-based databases for polymer matrix composite (PMC) materials. This and other reports extend the qualification framework to ox/ox CMC materials. This report is categorically similar to guidelines provided for the development of material specifications for PMC materials in DOT/FAA/AR-02/109 but has been revised to reflect unique requirements necessary for ox/ox CMCs.

The guidelines and recommendations are meant to be a documentation of current knowledge and application of sound engineering principles to the development and implementation of ox/ox CMC material procurement specifications. The framework for development of ox/ox CMCs material specifications is still being studied, and it is anticipated that revisions to strengthen or adjust the recommendations provided herein will be available in the future. This research report provides the current recommendations for ox/ox CMCs material specifications until and unless additional research or experience pointing towards alternative guidelines is developed.

This report can also be used to develop common industry specifications but is limited to recommendations and guidelines for the development of material specifications. Additional guidelines for the development of process specifications can be found in the companion report, Guidelines for the Development of Process Specifications, Instructions, and Controls for the Fabrication of Oxide/Oxide Ceramic Matrix Composites, DOT/FAA/TC-25/44. Additional guidelines for performing an ox/ox CMC material qualification or equivalency can be found in DOT/FAA/AR-25/27, Material Qualification and Equivalency for Oxide/Oxide Ceramic Matrix Composite Material Systems.
