The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and the Autonomous Aerial Systems Office (AASO) at the University of Montana conducted a study evaluating the use of a drone in a box (DiaB) to evaluate natural disasters. Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to identify areas with high potential for natural disasters. A market survey was conducted to evaluate specifications and costs of systems. And a template was developed for a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) waiver submission. The study evaluated system performance of various DiaB systems in extremes of temperature, cellular connectivity, and terrain. The MDT Traffic Management Center (TMC) and MDT staff provided feedback to evaluate use-cases which would streamline current workflows, reduce labor, and improve efficiency in operations.
