This research explored the concept of behavioral adaptation - how humans respond to introduction of a new technology that serves a specific need of the driver. Three existing naturalistic driving study databases were analyzed: (a) the L2 Naturalistic Driving Study, (b) the Virginia Connected Corridor Elite Naturalistic Driving Study, and (c) the Older Driver L2 Naturalistic Driving Study. The results illustrated an increase in eye off road metrics when L2 systems were active. Results further suggested that driver adaptation was present for high-risk secondary tasks, where there was a significant increase in engagement when L2 systems were active. Additionally, drivers set their vehicle speed above the speed limit more frequently over time, with higher speeds set when L2 systems were active.
