Abstract:Criteria are presented for selection of analytic models to represent waiting times due to queuing processes. An existing computer model by M.F. Neuts which assumes general nonparametric distributions of arrivals per unit time and service times for a single service was envisioned as best fulfilling requirements. Data obtained from Denver Stapleton Airport were applied to this model. Service times and arrival rates at an express baggage check facility, a security station and a gate were used as inputs. Delay times corresponding to the observed arrival rates were recorded and comapred to model outputs. Using the T-test, agremeent was obtained at the 5 percent level of significance for the mean values of the first two facilities. Predictions of waiting time distribution, however, did not pass the Kolmogroff test at the same level of significance. Discrepancies are due to a lack of time resolution in arrival times and the application of this model to multiserver situations.
