Abstract:This follow-on study to a 2015 report evaluated heavy-truck collision warning interfaces focused on the auditory and visual components of a forward collision warning system. This follow-up evaluated nighttime conditions and the implications of delaying the visual component of the alert. Overall, test drivers who received warning alerts responded significantly quicker than drivers who did not receive alerts, similar to the original testing. Delaying the visual component resulted in 100 percent of drivers looking forward to the road as their first response, but did not result in quicker brake response times versus when not delaying the visual alert.
