Abstract:An analysis has been made of the potentialities and problems involved in assigning some computer processing and control functions to the remote sites in an upgraded third generation air traffic control system. Interrogator sites offer the most fruitful opportunities for remote processing. The minimal remote processing configuration consists of extraction, compaction, and encoding of locally derived data. With concurrent remote tracking, additional tasks may be added, including roll call generation, data link management, ground communications management, and IPC service. Phased-array management is considered to be the function of a separate dedicated controller. Attention is directed to the need for an 'orderwire' net to avoid problems of floating control.
