Abstract:California Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology (PATH) was founded in 1986, as a partnership between the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and the University of California. PATH is a statewide research program in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) focusing on improving safety, system performance, accessibility, and sustainability with advanced ideas and technologies, emphasizing field operational tests necessary to assist with their eventual deployment. Collateral benefits include reduced energy consumption and lesser environmental impact and better land-use management, improving transportation equity amongst all users, and ultimately, in strengthening California’s economic vitality. PATH’s mission includes conducting leading-edge research, evaluating the benefits and feasibility of relevant ITS technologies, and conducting controlled experiments and field operational tests, while developing public/private/academic partnerships that facilitate the creation, advancement and eventual deployment of these technologies in California. PATH also educates students as well as practitioners on conducting these research activities and field tests, focusing on operational benefits that result from research in ITS. A key and unique aspect of PATH’s mission is to assist Caltrans and California in understanding and preparing for the adoption of emerging transportation technologies that hold promise to significantly improve: traveler safety; reduce traffic congestion; encourage the use of alternative transportation modes and facilitate the movement of goods and services; while simultaneously reducing greenhouse emissions and the detrimental impact of transportation on land use and sprawl, and improving air quality. The ultimate goal of this effort is to significantly improve the quality and sustainability of the movement of people and goods throughout all population and regional segments of California, while providing positive economic developmental impacts.
