Equations for estimating scour depth at bridge structures was developed from model and field data presented at the Symposium on Scour at Bridges in China, 1964. These equations have been used in highway and railway engineering in China for more than 20 years. This report is based on a recent research paper for improving these equations by Gao and Xu. The equations have been improved and verified using field data from China and other countries. Others have described the flow field and scour process in great detail. The focus of this report is on the development of equations based on hydraulic model studies and a considerable amount of field data. Results calculated from the equations are in reasonable agreement with field data.
