Abstract:Inasmuch as the ordinary effort of instrument flying is increased when the airplane is within the airport area due to the preparations for the approach and landing, it is advisable to afford the pilot some relief, if possible, from this increased effort. The Airport Orientator, an instrument developed by the Bureau of Air Commerce, provides the pilot with the airport and approach information he is trying to formulate in his mind, pictorially represented and held in proper orientation with the ground. In addition, the Orientator provides such information as the proper approach altitudes, location of principal obstructions, etc.
