Abstract:The State of Texas has over 75,000 miles of highway on the state-maintained highway system. Data collected and stored for these on-system highways consist of roadway environmental and traffic data, detailed accident data, bridge inventory and appraisal data, railroad crossing inventory data, and construction and maintenance history data. Processing of this volume of data for purposes of network and project planning activities is not a simple task. Over 1,000 distinct pieces of information have been identified in previous research studies for possible inclusion in a comprehensive data base structure. The State Department of Highways and Public Transportation (SDHPT) consists of 24 districts that oversee the dally project activities of the Department. In addition, 14 centralized divisions and various administrative sections are involved daily in the network and project planning activities necessary for the monumental task of maintaining a highway system of this size.
