Drum mix plants are the primary hot-mix asphalt (HMA) production plants for most Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) projects. In drum mix plants, a totalizer controls the input rate of virgin aggregates and recycled asphalt pavement (RAP). In current practice, the RAP percentage is determined by the input rate shown on the totalizer. However, KDOT conducted a detailed analysis of data from one project and found that the estimated amount of RAP based on the asphalt cement mass-balance method was higher than the designed RAP content. The study for this report included visits to several plants and the collection of plant operation and total production data to calculate the RAP percentage. Furthermore, a Monte-Carlo approach was followed to estimate RAP quantity based on RAP binder content, and actual plant input and output data verified the calculations. This report proposes test guidelines for RAP and reclaimed asphalt shingle percentages.
