Abstract:

The use of various chemicals for snow and ice control is an integral pa1t of the winter maintenance activities of most transportation agencies. Although the use of "road salt" and other deicing materials can be traced back to some of the earliest days of paved roadways, the application of these materials became more widespread, and their need more acute, with the dawning of the Interstate era in the mid- l 950s.
