Abstract:

This volume consists of a set of 24 presentations given at a conference for assessing the needs and opportunities for improving the performance of North American rail truck (or bogie) designs. The presentations start by giving an overview of the fundamentals of the standard "three-piece" truck design with several presentations on problems associated with current designs: including the New Car Syndrome, Low Rail Rollover Derailments, Braking and Wear Issues. Then the focus shifts to discussions of the economics along with inspection, modeling, truck performance specifications, recommended maintenance guidelines and possible solutions to wear problems. Finally, there are several presentations giving technical evaluations of proposed new truck designs (also see Truck Design Optimization Program) including performance and service testing results and economic evaluation of Advanced truck designs.
