  • Abstract:
This report presents the construction and performance evaluation of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) pavements constructed in Rapid City, SD, in the summer of 1988 (Haines Avenue) and in the winter of 1990 (Sheridan Lake Road). The primary objective of this evaluation was to compare the performance of SFRC pavement with that of non-reinforced concrete pavement. Using the selected mixture proportions with 0.5 volume percent of steel fibers, the Haines Avenue pavement was constructed with hooked end steel fibers and the Sheridan Lake Road pavement was constructed with corrugated steel fibers. Large number of test specimens were made from the field concretes and their basic properties and performance characteristics were evaluated. SFRC exhibited superior performance characteristics - it had higher flexural strength, considerably higher fatigue and impact strength, higher toughness, higher energy absorbing capacity and better post-crack load carrying capacity. Concrete cores taken from the pavements had shown that SFRC was well compacted, the fiber distribution was uniform throughout the depth, and the in-place compressive strength exceeded that of the design strength. The performance of the pavements was evaluated for a period of 5 years by conducting detailed inspection at every 3 months. The results of this investigation have shown that SFRC pavements are performing much better than the thicker non-reinforced concrete pavements. Recommendations are made for the implementation of the findings of this experimental project.
