Abstract:This report presents the procedures involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of the South Dakota Department of Transportation Office of Research Web Site. The Office of Research believed refinement of its existing web site would improve communication with other DOT offices, consultants, contractors, the public, and other state and federal agencies. Completion of this project required fulfilling three objectives by performing thirteen tasks. The objectives involved designing and building a functional web site for the Office of Research, and documenting all design and maintenance procedures. The researcher fulfilled the research objectives by completing the assigned tasks. A literature search was performed, and a meeting was held to discuss the project. After the project was defined the researcher sent out surveys to potential Office of Research web site users. After all suggestions from the surveys were recorded, the researcher created the web site layout. Upon completion of the layout, the researcher designed the theme for the web site. After the layout and theme were created the researcher met with the technical panel. After a layout and theme were chosen, the researcher constructed the template for the web site. The site was presented to the technical panel, and a usability study was created. The usability study was sent out to the same group of potential Office of Research web site users. Additions and changes resulting from the usability study were incorporated, where possible. The site was then presented to the technical panel for any further recommendations.
