Abstract:Achieving the long-term goal of decarbonizing the transportation sector requires transitioning to cleaner vehicles and fuels. However, it is also critical to continue improving vehicle efficiency through improved engines, rightsizing, more extensive use of lightweight materials, enhanced aerodynamics, and hybridization of power sources. Conventional vehicles with internal combustion engines, which includes hybrid electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, will continue to be sold and driven over the coming decades – improving their efficiency will be an important lever to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the transportation sector.
