Abstract:This research note examines seat belt use in 2022. The national estimate of seat belt use by adult front-seat passengers in 2022 was 91.6 percent, a record high although not statistically different (at the 0.05 level) from 90.4 percent observed in 2021. The seat belt use rate estimate represents the percentage of occupants who are belted during an average daylight moment. There has been an increasing trend of seat belt use over a 15-year period, contrasted with a declining trend in the percentage of unrestrained passenger vehicle occupant fatalities during daytime. The 2022 survey found some significant changes in seat belt use from 2021 to 2022 for some of the occupant categories. Seat belt use continued to be higher in the west compared to the other regions of the country. Seat belt use also continued to be higher in the States where vehicles can be pulled over solely for occupants not using seat belts (“primary law States”) compared to the States with weaker enforcement laws (“secondary law States”) or no seat belt laws for adults. The 2022 data collection occurred in early June immediately following the Click It or Ticket campaign. The number of occupants observed in the 2022 survey declined by 6 percent following a rebound in 2021.
