Abstract:This is a report of an organizational health assessment for the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) in 2006. Organizational health is one of the four pillars of the SDDOT strategic plan, so the results of this project are a key measure of performance against the strategic goal to “make the Department of Transportation a desirable place to work” in order to “attract and retain the best possible employees.” The five objectives of this study were: to: 1) measure the Department of Transportation’s employees’ perceptions and level of satisfaction regarding organizational health; 2) identify the Department of Transportation’s organizational strengths and weaknesses; 3) evaluate progress in improving the Department’s culture, through comparison between the current assessment and baseline measurements of earlier assessments; 4) recommend specific actions that the Department can take to achieve its strategic goals and improve its organizational health; and 5) refine a survey instrument and process that can be used to periodically assess the Department’s organizational health.
