Union Pacific has developed an unusual and innovative design for a yard that eliminates the use of a master retarder, with all control being concentrated in the group retarders. UP has tested this design extensively with SRI’s PROFILE software, and it appears to perform satisfactorily. Additionally, the design was tested extensively on WABCO’s programs, with a similar conclusion. Although the design is unusual, UP and WABCO are pursuing it further as of this writing.
