Certain generic functions need to be performed in most modern hump yards, including: Control of retarders; Control of switches; Control of signals/communications requirements of yard engine movements; Yard inventory tracking; Receive/process/transmit advance train consist information; Receive/process/transmit accounting and financial information such as car weights, billing, routing, shipper, consignee information, etc. Vendors have taken different approaches to satisfying these requirements including multiple distributed or single computer approaches. There does not exist a systematic treatment of pros and cons. This is suggested as a future research priority.
