Abstract:In our discussions with various railroad personnel, suppliers, and consultants, we are left with the impression that yard design know-how is possessed by a handful of people scattered within the railroad industry. Most of their valuable knowledge is either undocumented or obscurely documented. The need for a systematic compilation of this scattered knowledge is obvious. If is the goal of our current research to fulfill this need. The paper will discuss a few specific hardware components and document their functions.
