Abstract:The topic for this Transportation Librarians Roundtable is succession planning. Presenters Cara Marcus and Bob Cullen offer insights on how succession planning is a crucial element in an organization’s strategic planning. Succession planning helps prepare for a smooth transition from outgoing to incoming employees. Marcus describes four steps in succession planning: preparation, skills, training, and creating the plan. Marcus also shares succession planning templates developed for the National RTAP Transit Manager’s Toolkit. Cullen provides a definition of knowledge management as it relates to succession planning, defining the major types of knowledge as explicit knowledge, tacit knowledge, and cultural knowledge. Librarians are important to succession planning because of their organizational connectivity skills. Maintaining continuity while also minimizing disruptions is an outcome of succession planning.
