Abstract:The need to improve the Nation's safety record has been a concern of the highway profession since the first organized plan to build roads started after World War I. Our success and failure to accomplish this goal is best illustrated by analyzing the Nation's fatal accident rate during the last 50 years. The accident rate for any given year has been rather variable, but over the 50 year period has been a consistent down! ward trend in the fatality rate. There are a number of safety milestones worthy of mention during the past 50 years.
