Abstract:The FAA will convene a symposium on Turbulence in Washington, D. C, on 22 through 24 March 1971, at the Marriott Twin Bridges Hotel. The presentations and discussions will encompass the various sources of turbulence including: 1. Wake Turbulence. The results of extensive flight tests conducted during 1970 by FAA, NASA and the Boeing Company to investigate the trailing wing tip vortices of large aircraft. 2. Clear Air Turbulence. Developments in the detection and avoidance of this atmospheric phenomena which causes uncomfortable and sometimes serious rough air encounters. 3 * Wind Shear. New techniques for identifying and measuring sharp division of air flows at various flight levels. 4. Thunderstorms. An updating in knowledge, procedures and equipment for coping with this type of operational turbulence. 5. Turbulence Plotting. New techniques for instantaneous plotting and display of turbulence to airmen.
