  • Abstract:
The U.S. Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS) worked with the Transportation Research Board (TRB) to hold their fifth biennial research and development conference, “Transforming the Marine Transportation System through Multimodal Freight Analytics,” in Washington, D.C. at the National Academy of Sciences on June 19-21, 2018. Over this three-day forum, 107 experts from government, industry, and academia shared and explored ideas about multimodal freight data and analytics that could potentially transform the current marine transportation system. The program included three keynote addresses, three plenaries, ten breakout sessions, a student honor panel, and, for the first time in this meeting’s history, an interactive demonstration of four different researchers work in an evening session. As with the previous iterations of this intimate research and development conference on the marine transportation system (MTS), this year’s conference closed with a summary session which integrated highlights from MTS researchers discussed at the conferences with discussions about how policy may be leveraged to incorporate recommendations from the research and development community. This summary details the key takeaways from this conference to inform the broader strategy for MTS-related research and development in the near future. The following presents the notable keynote thoughts and visions, a synopsis of each of the panel discussions, and the major points discussed in the many Technical Breakout Sessions. The document then identifies the specific gaps and needs the MTS should be addressing to inform future research and policy prioritization.
