Abstract:
This booklet is published by the Missouri State Highway Patrol as an aid to persons who

are interested in the traffic accident problem in Missouri. It contains information which

provides for a comprehensive look at the Statewide accident problems as experienced in

2008. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is the central traffic accident data collection agency for the State of Missouri. Data on both rural and urban traffic crashes is made available to this agency. Law enforcement agencies throughout the State provide the Highway Patrol with

copies of their accident reports. All reports of traffic accidents including those investigated by the Missouri State Highway Patrol are tabulated and analyzed by this agency. It is thus due, in part, to the continued cooperation of these law enforcement agencies that a meaningful picture of the statewide accident experience is available to interested persons.

Here at a glance are some interesting statistics found in this booklet: In 2008 there were 960 persons killed in traffic accidents in the State of Missouri, 32 (3.2%) less than in 2007. There was a decrease of about 6.14% in total accidents statewide compared to 2007. Speed and drinking were the lead Probable Contributing Circumstances in fatal accidents. Of all fatal accidents, 33% involved drinking/drugs. Of all persons killed in Missouri traffic crashes in 2008, 391 (40.73%) were in the 16-35 age group. The age group most overrepresented in Missouri fatal traffic crashes is 16-20 (137 killed - 14.27% of the total). It is interesting to note that in known cases only 12.65% of all traffic crashes occurred during inclement weather (rain, snow, sleet, freezing temp., fog or mist). Of all traffic crashes reported statewide, 75.05% were property damage only. Of all traffic crashes, 71.5% occurred during the daylight hours and 73.76% occurred on dry pavement. Of all fatal Missouri traffic crashes, 57.51% involved only one vehicle. Jackson County recorded the most traffic fatalities with 83.
