Abstract:This report describes test procedures with countermeasure timing constraints used to qualify the performance of intersection movement assist and left turn assist safety applications. These applications warn the driver of an imminent straight-crossing-paths or left-turn-across-path/opposite-direction collision at a road junction. The test procedures focus on controlled track testing of light vehicles (i.e., passenger vehicles and light duty trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than or equal to 10,000 pounds). The test procedures are designed so that vehicle maneuvers in each test scenario reflect naturalistic driving behaviors. The test procedures include crash-imminent test scenarios where the applications would be expected to warn the driver of a potential threat, non-crash-imminent test scenarios where the applications would be expected to suppress a warning to the driver because there is no threat due to differences in timing between the vehicles, and false-alert style test scenarios where no warnings would be expected to be issued because the paths of the vehicles do not overlap. The timing of alerts in the crash-imminent and non-crash-imminent scenarios is designed to reflect the timing of when normal drivers are unable to safely navigate intersections (resulting in crashes) and when drivers are able to safely navigate intersections without crashing.
