Abstract:This report explores how transit providers make decisions and assess their internal business case for transit bus automation. It aims to inform transit agencies and other transit industry stakeholders interested in understanding how agencies are approaching automation decisions. This report covers decision-making for all capital investments, decision-making specifically for automation projects, the benefits and costs of transit bus automation, and the challenges to assessing the business case for transit bus automation. Findings are that agencies often approach automation projects the same way they would other capital investments, but they often have to rely on qualitative measures to assess the fast-moving world of transit bus automation. The ability of agencies to assess their business case for automation is limited by data availability and a lack of knowledge on regulatory issues as well as uncertainty over operational changes, customer acceptance, and the applicability of findings from various pilot projects.
