Modeling Noise and Acceptability of eVTOL Operations is presented to the Urban Air Mobility (UAM) ecosystem members at the Uber Elevate Summit, 2018. An example of and audibility visualization of moving conventional helicopter and notional eVTOL source characteristics is provided. The analysis presents dPrime audibility and recommends additional acoustic metrics based on narrow band acoustics, that are suitable for evaluation of community acceptance. The audibility techniques presented include time audible, dPrime and Time Varying Loudness (TVL). An example analysis using the Advanced Acoustic Model (AAM) that takes into account existing databases of background noise is provided. Leveraging recent research at US National Parks via noise management by zones is suggested. Recommendations for future acoustic modeling improvements for UAM noise, including the use of 1/12 octave bands, higher time sampling capability and integration of TVL loudness metrics is provided.
The development of new air vehicles (e.g., personal air vehicles, urban taxis, etc.) has led to a proliferation of Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL)...
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Park Service conducted joint research to better understand the effects of noise due to commercial air...
