  • Abstract:
The technology applications mission of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is to ensure the timely identification and assessment of innovative research results, technology, and products and the application of those that are determined to be of potential benefit to the highway community. The technology applications program involves all areas of highway technology, including asphalt and concrete pavements, environment, structures, geotechnology, hydraulics, safety, motor carriers, and traffic operations and management. The program also includes activities related to the implementation of the products from the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and the administration of the Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) for FHWA. This publication focuses on the four categories that, for the most part, comprise the technology applications program: Demonstration, application, test and evaluation, and special. Technical activities are assigned to one of the categories depending on the stage of the technology, and, after development, what technology transfer or marketing approach would be the most useful in reaching the intended users.
