Abstract:This research project, sponsored by the Oregon Economic Development Department and the U.S. Highway Administration, investigates the design of scenic routes and outlines a scenic route planning process, focusing in particular on signing for significant attractions or features which are in or associated with the highway corridor. The analysis is based on a case study of the U.S. Highway 30 from the outskirts of Portland to and including the City of Astoria. This portion of Highway 30 follows the lower reach of the Columbia River and passes through the Coast Range before ending at U.S. Highway 101 on the Oregon coast. Teh scope and timing of the contract for the research project limited the study to this specific location, a limited set of issues, and to a six-week period.
