Traffic calming is becoming a popular traffic management tool in many areas of the world including Europe, Japan, and North America. In addition to requests from neighborhood groups, pedestrians and bicyclists have gotten involved in supporting traffic calming. The reasons these groups are supporting traffic calming varies. However, some of the most important reasons are for safer and more pleasant neighborhoods, environmental concerns, and places for people to walk and bike. The body of this report can be divided into three parts. The first two major sections examine the history and traffic-calming techniques installed in Europe, Japan, and the United States. The final section of the report examines the practical and policy implication of traffic calming.
