Abstract:To develop a useful global damage identification scheme, noise and spareseness of the measured modal data must be taken into account. Measurement noise if inevitable. If one does not consider noise and its random nature, the damage evaluation algorithm may not provide accurate results. In addition to noise, spatial sparseness of measured modal response presents a main problem in developing a robust damage detection scheme. Most civil engineering structures require a large number of degrees of freedom in a finite element model due to their size and complexity, however, only a limited number of physical locations can be practically measures.
