  • Abstract:
This report summarizes U.S. cargo that moved via Canada and Mexico in 1999, compared to 1998. For the first time we are also including U.S. cargo transshipped via Mexico. The summary tables and graphics show the transshipped cargo movements in historical perspective, by customs districts, by countries of destination and origin, and by leading Harmonized 4-digit commodity codes. Appendixes E-1, E-2, I-1, and I-2 display summaries of transshipped cargo by country within customs districts for Canada and Mexico, respectively. Appendixes E-3, E-4, I-3, and I-4 contain leading 4-digit Harmonized commodity movements by U.S. customs district transshipped via Canada and Mexico. Beginning with this report, we include all estimated cargo transshipments, without any minimum cargo exclusions. Data for 1998 has been restated on the same basis for comparison with 1999 data. However, historical data prior to 1998 has not been adjusted to reflect this change. The difference amounts to approximately a 1.0% increase in value for both exports and imports. A brief description of the methodology used in deriving the transshipped cargo value and estimated weight is included in a section on methodology following the summary tables and charts. In addition to this report, the source data is available upon request from the Maritime Administration in database format in both 4-digit and 6-digit Harmonized Code detail. In 1999 U.S. cargo transshipped via Canada was $26.74 billion and 6,859,085 estimated metric tons. Exports amounted to $8.76 billion and 2,462,569 metric tons. Imports were $17.98 billion and 4,396,516 metric tons. U.S. transshipments via Mexico were $2.73 billion and 262,421 estimated metric tons. Exports were $.095 billion and 32,054

estimated metric tons. Imports were $2.63 billion and 230,357 estimated metric tons.
