Abstract:

The United States has the largest transportation system in the world. It serves 260 million people and 6 million business establishments spread over the fourth largest country (in land area) in the world. This report provides a snapshot of the transportation system, highlighting its physical characteristics and trends in passenger travel and freight movement, and examining transportation's economic performance, its safety record, energy use, and environmental impacts.
