Abstract:Accident information is an important factor from which to work towards the
regional Transportation System Management (TSM) objective of improving the
safety of the local transportation system. The 1993 Quad City Intersection
Traffic Accident Report provides a source of accident information through which
state and local officials may examine and respond to changing traffic conditions
in the urbanized area. This report identifies and analyzes hazardous
intersections in the Iowa and Illinois Quad City Urbanized Area. The ten
highest ranked intersections in each state were identified for 1993 through
an evaluation process based on accident frequency, severity and rate. A tie in
ranking in the Iowa Quad cities resulted in eleven intersections being included
in the top list. These twenty-one locations are further analyzed using collision
diagrams, accident history, collision types, and pertinent conditions. The year
1993 marked the first time that the same $500 property damage or any personal
injury criterion was used by both Illinois and Iowa in accident reporting. This
made it possible to rank accident locations for the entive Quad City Area. The
appendices included at the end of this study report provide cost estimates for
typical intersection improvements and suggestions for possible cause and
countermeasures for the prevailing problems at critical locations.
