Abstract:The goal of this report is to provide insights regarding the potential unintended negative impacts that the introduction of automation can have on human performance and resultant system behavior when a decision support system fails or exhibits degraded performance. It further provides human factors guidance on methods to mitigate potential risks to efficiency and safety resulting from such impacts on human - automation interaction. These conclusions are developed based on lessons learned from the past introduction of automation in aviation, nuclear power and naval operations, as well as in healthcare, and are then applied to provide guidance for the design and use of automation to support trajectory based operations for the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen).
