Abstract:

The purpose of this document is to provide assistance in the form of a general set of guidelines that can be used by Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs), communities, and counties as they plan and develop bicycle facilities. Although the emphasis of the guidelines is on planning for bicycle transportation, general design information on the different types of bicycle facilities (bike lanes, wide curb lanes, bicycle paths, paved shoulders) has been provided. Often the consideration of the different types of bicycle facilities is necessary when alternative bicycle route options are being evaluated.
