Abstract:This report provides factual information about and analysis of the U.S. freight hauling trucking industry using the U.S. Bureau of the Census Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey (VIUS) databases from 1992 and 1997. The VIUS is collected every five years with 1997 being the latest data available. The VIUS can be used to help understand the U.S. truck fleet make-up, size, uses, location, and type of commodities hauled at the national and regional levels. This information is used to present a picture of the U.S. truck fleet and its uses as well as to evaluate the potential national/regional policy options. The trucks of interest in this report are the freight-hauling larger trucks, specifically trucks with 5 axles or more.
