Abstract:This report presents the recommendations for coastal bridges potentially vulnerable to hurricane events for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The main goal of this research was to evaluate potential hurricane hazard to coastal bridges from wave forces. It has been observed during past hurricanes that bridges located in the coastal environment are vulnerable to deck shifting/unseating due to wave forces. It is recommended through this study that coastal bridges be elevated in the future and that dowel connections should be considered in conjunction with external restrainers to reduce the vulnerability. This research provides an improved understanding of vulnerable bridge elements as well as further insight into preventing and mitigating damage that can occur during a major hurricane event.
