Abstract:The U.S. Department of Transportation 2002 budget totals $59.5 billion and is 6 percent above the 2001 funding level adjusted for one-time appropriations totaling $2.8 billion. The budget invests in the safety, mobility, economic growth, environment and national security of the United States in a manner that is responsible and forward-looking. The budget calls for the highway and transit funding guaranteed in the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) and aviation operating, capital and airport grant funding authorized in the Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st Century (AIR-21). This "Budget in Brief" report contains a one-page performance progress report; a letter from the Secretary of Transportation, Norman Y. Mineta; an overview of the 2002 budget; highlights of the 2002 budget by operating administration; and four tables showing 1) appropriations, 2) budget authority, 3) outlays and 4) full time equivalent employment.
