Abstract:To demonstrate the technical and cost-effective application of externally bonded FRP for retrofit of a concrete T-beam bridge, the specific candidate bridge was selected from those defined as Class-1 structures in Phase I. An assessment and evaluation of in situ materials and field-obtained samples was conducted. Structural analysis based on AASHTO specifications and finite element modeling was performed to examine the capacity of the selected bridge. The FE model was calibrated by using testing data of the bridge under truck loads. A design approach for the FRP strengthening was proposed and illustrated. Finally, advice on effective protocols to follow for successful implementation of the field work was given.
