Abstract:This GAO report to Congress discusses how FAA made its decisions to locate air traffic control facilities and equipment in fiscal years 1992 through 1994 for three terminal area projects: (1) establishment of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS), which allow aircraft to approach and land at airports during adverse weather; (2) replacement of antiquated Terminal Air Traffic Control (Tower) Facilities; and (3) establishment of Digital Brite Radar Indicator Tower Equipment (D-BRITE), which assists tower controllers in identifying and sequencing traffic. The GAO found a lack of benefit cost analysis or national ranking of priorities. The GAO list recommendations for determination of FAA procurement and construction projects.
