Abstract:Bike&Place is a new, open-source tool for designing transportation networks that are conducive to bicycle travel in small towns by the typical actual or potential cyclist and supportive of convivial public places. Thus, Bike&Place is as much about place-making as it is about active transportation planning. Too often, planners working with small towns do not have a travel demand model. Lacking a model, they have a limited ability to rigorously, quantitatively assess current conditions and proposed changes to a town’s transportation network. This study helps overcome that limitation. This report provides detailed instructions for working with the model and tailoring it to a particular study area. Applications of Bike&Place are well within the capabilities of persons with basic GIS skills, even if they have no experience with travel demand models. Three small towns in Mississippi were the test beds for developing Bike&Place: New Albany, Pontotoc City, and Houston. This report illustrates the towns’ transportation networks and maps the current levels of traffic stress, link by link. A travel demand model is calibrated for one town, Houston, and used to assess the increase in bicycle-based accessibility afforded by hypothetical enhancements to the roadway network reducing traffic stress.
