Abstract:The primary objective of this study is to provide a technical tool to compute bridge scour in steep mountain channels. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) builds and maintains many roadway projects with bridges that cross rivers and small streams. CDOT currently uses Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) HEC-18 methods to estimate bridge pier and abutment scour values, but HEC-18 equations were developed using hydraulic conditions for flat channels. The equations developed in this study will be applicable to the range of slopes, velocities, and depths encountered in bridges crossing steeper Colorado streams.
